Help Your Student Stand Out in Admissions Interviews

Preparation That Makes the Difference

When your student has worked hard to achieve academic excellence, the interview shouldn’t be what holds them back. Whether they’re applying to competitive high schools, selective summer programs, or college admissions, the interview can be the deciding factor that sets apart similarly qualified candidates.

I meet students where they are at and help build their confidence and skills so that they can present their best, most authentic self in a way that shines.Through targeted coaching, students develop the skills to articulate their story clearly, answer questions thoughtfully and make a positive impression on the interviewer.

What I Offer

Through personalized coaching sessions, your student will develop:

  • One-on-one coaching tailored to your student’s age, personality, and target program.
  • A practical, supportive approach: no “salesy” pitches, no stiff scripts – just authentic storytelling and clear communication.
  • Guidance on how to craft a standout “Tell me about yourself” (or “Why our program?”) response that your student feels good about.
  • Strategies for handling nerves, thinking on-the-spot, and speaking under pressure (even when the camera’s on or the interviewer is tough).
  • Mock interviews with targeted, constructive feedback and actionable improvement steps.
  • Between-session support: homework prompts and feedback on videos.

Why It Matters

Interview skills can be learned and developed. With the right preparation, your student can approach interviews with admissions counselors and university alumni with confidence, knowing they have the tools to present themselves effectively.

I’ve successfully helped students gain admission to competitive high schools, selective summer programs, college programs (including direct-admit medical school BS/MD programs) and win large scholarships. The skills the develop don’t just help them with the interview; they’re lifelong communication skills that will serve them far beyond the interview itself.

Do you offer coaching in person?

All coaching is done virtually, via Zoom. (An alternative platform can be used for students unable to access Zoom. I have used WhatsApp video calls and FaceTime for students living outside the US.)

What if my student has multiple interviews for different schools or programs?

No problem. The skills are transferable. Once a student learns the core techniques, I can work with them on how to customize their answers to the specific interview.

When should my student start preparing?

Ideally you would begin a several weeks before the interview date. I understand that interviews aren’t always scheduled that far in advance, so the second best option is to start as soon as you can! Even if a student is only able to schedule one hour with me, they can still benefit from learning the frameworks and individualized coaching and feedback.

What age group do you work with?

I work with students as young as eighth grade who are applying for competitive high school admissions. The vast majority of my students are high school seniors who are doing admissions interviews for universities across the country. I also work with students ages 13 and up who are applying for programs that require an admissions interview as well.

Do you help with application essays or resumes?

My primary focus is on interview preparation and communication skills. For comprehensive essay coaching, I recommend my colleague Kelly Thompson-Anthony at Write Well Academy. We occasionally offer joint workshops that cover both components.

Can parents sit in on sessions?

Unless you will be allowed to be in the room with your student when they interview, you should not be present during the practice sessions. I believe it is important to replicate the actual interview situation as close as possible for the best possible outcome.

Do you work with introverted students and/or non neurotypical students?

Yes! I have experience working with extremely shy students, students on the autism spectrum, with ADHD, dyslexia, and CAPD. I do ask that parents be upfront with me as to any special circumstances so that I can be prepared for our first meeting. I highly, highly recommend multiple sessions for these students.

What will my student need to get started?

First and foremost they need to come with a willingness to learn and try their best. I will also ask for information about what they are interviewing for, a copy of their resume (if available), and that they be prepared to tell me the three things they are most proud of. That can be any combination of skills they’ve learned, strengths they possess or accomplishments.
